Team IO takes on Bode Miller in Kaprun, Austria

On May 14th IndependentOwners.com sponsored the England A team at the Ski & Golf World Championships in Austria. The Suffolk quintet caused quite a stir at their first ever appearance in the games competing with the likes of US skiing icon Bode Miller, who has two Olympic silver medals and two Alpine Skiing World Cup titles.

Team Captain Dave Marr said: “It would have been difficult to imagine being able to compete in the Ski & Golf World Championships without the significant support of our main sponsors – IndependentOwners.com. This event is fast achieving cult status and we lined up against several Olympic Champions including the current World Cup overall ski champion – Bode Miller from the US. Thanks to their contribution we were able to engage the services of one of Austria’s top ski coaches and as a result our team performed very credibly in the event beating competitors from Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Scotland!

Leading up to the competition in Kaprun, Austria the Suffolk boys were earning a local following and were likened even to the film Cool Runnings where a Jamaican bobsled team wows at the Olympics. The daily paper, the Evening Star, credited team members Dave Marr (captain), Lee Dinmore, Kristian Day, Jerry Proctor and Matt Gissing with cult status!

And why not? Where the men lack a bit in experience on the slopes with two members considered only beginners, all of them have handicaps of five or less on the fairways. Kristian Day leads with a handicap of only one. This is precisely why the England Team A attracted so much attention. In their first year entering the competition, these five unknowns became the favoured underdogs and amassed the largest following in the competition.

The Ski & Golf World Championships consists of an international giant slalom race on a glacier paired with two rounds of championship standard 18-hole golf at Austria’s renowned Zell am See Resort.

Our golf star, Kristian Day, shot the lowest score of the 2nd round golf tournament, beating all other competitors who played a total of 456 rounds, when he recorded a 4 under par 69 on the picturesque, but tricky Kitzsteinhorn course at Zell am See, Austria. This really put England A on the radar of the event and considerable interest was taken in our Team as we made significant headway in the latter stages of the Championship,” said Captain Marr.

Robert Burdett, Head of Operations of IndependentOwners.com said: “We are very pleased with the fantastic performance of the England A team, and as a company had a lot of fun with the event. For the team to have tackled the likes of Bode Miller on the slopes must have been a truly daunting experience, and they pulled it off with aplomb. We are certainly looking forward to next year’s competition and hopefully with our continued support the team will continue to shine.

Sounds awesome – anywhere we can read more info about the event this year, and maybe details of next year’s?
