Located in the Limousin in central France, Lac Vassivière covers a total area of over 1000 hectares and is one of the largest man-made lakes in France. It’s a perfect place to enjoy a holiday in one the quieter and cheaper parts of France.
The lake was created in 1949 and supplies France with electrical energy via the Hydroelectric power station run by EDF, the 45km of shoreline provides ample opportunity for a fantastic vacation.
The opportunities for watersports are numerous and most activities are catered for. You can bring your own boat, windsurfer or canoes – or hire some of the ones available. The lake offers a vast area which can be fished – Carp, pike & pikeperch can all be found but to be enjoyed best why not use a boat?
The shoreline contains numerous beaches, campsites restaurants, marinas and there is even an island in the middle. Architects Aldo Rossi and Xavier Fabre created the Vassivière Contemporary Art Centre on the Island in 1986 and in order to preserve its atmosphere, it is a car-free zone although you can take the tourist train across to the island in season. A free Taxi Boat service also operates which will take you and your bikes to one of several points around the lake.
For cyclists, the lake is ideal for cycling due to the low volume of vehicles on the road. Whether your preference is dirt tracks in the woods for your mountain bike or maybe following the Raymond Poulidor circuit around the lake you won’t be disappointed.
Vacations spent around Lac Vassiviere are peaceful and revitalising, as holidays should be. It caters for most types of holidays, apart from rowdy nightlife so no stags or hens thank you. It is a family place with a relaxed atmosphere and as little or as much as you want to do. Why not spend your next holiday around the lake, just don’t tell too many people!
